International Appalachian Trail Working Group

Description

The mission of the International Appalachian Trail is to establish a long distance walking trail that extends beyond borders to all geographical regions once connected by the Appalachian- Caledonian orogen, formed more that 250million years ago on the super continent Pangea.

The Appalachian Mountains are now spread across the eastern United States, eastern Canada, Greenland, Scandinavia, the British Isles, Brittany, the Iberian Peninsula and the Atlas mountains of Morocco and Algeria. Working Groups are in place in these areas.

In addition to connecting people and places, the goal of the working groups is to promote the natural and cultural heritage, health and fitness, environmental stewardship, fellowship and understanding, cross border co-operation and rural economic development through eco and geo tourism and to further promote the feeling of connectivity between the respective jurisdictions.
