Department for Communities - Access & Inclusion Programme

The Head of Culture presented the above report, previously circulated to Members.  She stated that the purpose of the report was to seek Members’ approval to accept the Letters of Offer from the Department for Communities (DfC) for the delivery of access improvements to cultural assets within the Derry City and Strabane District Council area totalling £201,640.

The Chair stated that the funding offer towards improving access and inclusion for the citizens of Derry City and Strabane District Council was a very good news story.

Councillor McMahon thanked officers for their work towards securing the funding allocation for the Strabane area.  He stated that this was another step forward in making Council facilities family friendly.

Councillor Cusack also congratulated officers on the very important work carried out to secure the funding from DfC.  She stated that this may encourage the private sector to follow Council’s lead regarding access and inclusion for all.

Alderman Hussey congratulated officers on the tremendous investment by Council and also welcomed the direction of that investment particularly in the Strabane area. He referred to the proposed changing place facility within Strabane Community Library and asked what activity was being displaced in that area to accommodate the new changing facility.

In response, the Head of Culture stated that the area was formerly used as a meeting and function room and after consultation with Libraries NI it was agreed that the activity within that area could be accommodated elsewhere.

                        The Committee

Recommended       that Members accept the respective Letters of Offer from the Department for Communities and progress with project delivery.
