Déanann an Chomhairle comhghairdeas leis na grúpaí siúd, Studio 2, The North West Amateur Radio Club agus Amelia Earhart Derry Group a bhíonn samhlaíoch agus cruthaitheach ag cinntiú go gcuimhnítear ar leagáid thuairlingt Amelia Earhart i nDoire agus go gceiliúrtar í mar chéim mhór chun tosaigh in eitlíocht na mban.

 

Ceiliúrann 2022 an 90ú cuimhneachán den tuairlingt stairiúil seo i gceantar Ballyarnett.

 

Chun an ócáid a cheiliúradh mar is cuí, oibreoidh an Chomhairle leis na grúpaí leasmhara chun clár imeachtaí a fhorbairt agus a sholáthar.  Bheadh mór-ócáid i mBallyarnett i gceist chun an cuimhneachán a ceangal leis an suíomh tuairlingte.

 

Cuirfidh an Chomhairle páipéar faoi bhráid an choiste chuí chun roghanna don chlár imeachtaí a phlé.

 

Council congratulates those groups including Studio 2, the North West Amateur Radio Club and the Amelia Earhart Derry Group, who have been imaginative and creative in ensuring that the legacy of Amelia Earhart’s landing in Derry is remembered and celebrated for its great stride in female aviation. 

 

2022 will mark the 90th anniversary of this historic landing in the Ballyarnett area. 

 

To appropriately mark the occasion, Council will work with the interested groups to develop and deliver a programme of events. This should include a major event in Ballyarnett to link the anniversary with the landing site. 

 

Council will bring back a paper to the appropriate committee to discuss options for the programme of events. 

 

Alderman Ramsey to Move:

 

Council recognises the deficit in play provision across the District as identified in the Play Park Strategy. This has been added to with a number of parks currently closed due to health and safety concerns with no plan in place for replacement. Whilst acknowledging the very significant capital aspirations and competing priorities for investment, Council supports the need for new investment to be identified within its capital strategy to address these deficits.

 

Councillor Doyle to Move:

 

That this Council notes the impact on community wellbeing of green spaces and the pride communities take in parks in their areas;

 

Notes the Ballyarnett Country Park Landscape Masterplan and pending Outline Planning Permission for the project;

 

Expresses concern at the current state of Ballyarnett Country Park including damaged surfaces, lack of amenities, anti-social behaviour occurrences and lack of disabled access and;

 

Calls for a multi-disciplinary team to be established for the purpose of surveying the entirety of the park, identifying remedial works, maintenance, oversight and bringing the park to its full potential by producing a plan with park users and nearby residents as to its facilities and usage whilst capital funding for the masterplan is secured.
