This Council recognises the considerable benefits of becoming a preferred destination for the film and broadcast industry.

 

Acknowledges how this can have huge positive impacts on both our economy, employment and tourism offering.

 

Understands that the majority of local councils on these islands have a dedicated film department and film officer tasked with working proactively to accommodate and attract location contracts.

 

Commits that Derry City and Strabane District Council adopts the same approach and redevelops its Business and Culture Department to include film in its structure, strategy and name.

That this Council congratulates the Irish-speaking community of Derry City and Strabane District on the announcement of funding for Naíscoil na Seolta in East Belfast.   This is the first integrated Irish-medium pre-school in that part of Belfast and it is hoped that this will make the Irish Language more accessible to all the community there and here.

This Council asserts that housing, and having a place to call home, is a fundamental right; 

 

welcomes the recent announcement by the Minister for Communities Deirdre Hargey that the construction of new social homes started in 20/21 year has exceeded the target by 30% and represents the highest number of social housing starts in a year for the last decade;

 

further welcomes the news that the number of social homes competed in 20/21 also exceeds the target for the year;

 

acknowledges that the budget for new social housing of £162m for 2021/22 which is an increase of approximately £26m from the previous year, as committed within the NDNA deal, has been secured;

 

commits to writing to Minister Hargey to express our support for transformative change that will deliver more homes, including for those with disabilities, young people and families.
