Notices of Motion

Councillor Edwards to Move:

That this Council recognises the bravery and heroism of Irish soldiers during the siege of Jadotville in 1961;

Notes the local connection of A Company to our own Council area;

Further notes A Company Commandant Pat Quinlan’s recommendation that 27 of his men be awarded Distinguished Service Medals and five the Military Medal of Gallantry by the Irish Government;

Recognises these medals were never given and supports an all island campaign to ensure veterans of the Siege of Jadotville get the medals they deserve;

Further recognises that only 8 of the men recommended for medals are alive today;

Welcomes the Minister of Defence, Simon Coveney, decision to instigate an independent group of experts to review the issue;

And agrees to write to the Taoiseach, Minister of Defence and the Irish President requesting they formally award the Military Medal of Gallantry to the veterans of the siege of Jadotville in view of their outstanding bravery and heroism shown.

Councillor Doyle to Move:

That this Council, in light of the increase in mental health conditions arising from the pandemic, ongoing prevalence of poor mental health in the District evidenced by in-patient bed occupancy and waiting times to access services, declare a Mental Health Emergency.

That an All Party Working Group be convened to prepare a response from this Council to the Mental Health Strategy 2021-2031 consultation, lobby for sustainable, funded and accessible services in the City and District and monitor its implementation.

Furthermore that this Council will act to ensure that the improved mental health of its people and the services required to address mental health conditions in primary, secondary and care in the community are, where possible, sited in this City and District and will lobby collectively the Health and Social Care Board, commissioning bodies and the Department of Health to that end.

Councillor Gallagher to Move:

That this Council adopt a policy of recycling its hardware such as IT Equipment. We find ourselves in difficult times that is affecting every aspect of our society. With the current restrictions what has come quickly to the fore is the need for home-schooling and this has resulted in a lot of our children not getting access to education because of the lack of equipment and we, as a Council could go some way to addressing this issue by putting to better use of what we are disposing off and make available to the local community.

Councillor Cooper to Move:

Given the increasing demand for bi-lingual street signs to be installed in the DCSDC area, this council supports the lowering of the threshold for the installation of bilingual signage in addresses within the DCSDC boundary to 15%. This proposal would require one resident or their local councillor to come forward with the request to erect a bilingual street sign and if this was to gain the support of 15% of residents on the electoral register then this would be suffice to go forward for approval by Council.
