Notices of Motion

Cllr Farrell to Move:

That this Council recognises the value of increased higher education provision via expansion of existing Ulster University presence or the establishment of an independent university, in delivering improved economic, social and cultural outcomes in the North West;

welcomes commitment in New Decade, New Approach to expand university provision at Magee to 10,000 students, including delivery of the Graduate Entry Medical School;

believes that the current Maximum Student Numbers cap is a critical barrier to planned expansion;

calls on the NI Executive to work collaboratively with Ulster University, Irish Government and UK Government to deliver the business case and expansion plans;

and further calls on the Minister for Economy to make necessary adjustments to the Maximum Student Numbers cap for exclusive use in Derry to allow planned expansion to become a reality.

Cllr Mellon to Move:

That Derry City and Strabane District Council notes the public disappointment at the lack of progress to date to advance the construction and re-development of Templemore Sports Complex. This motion calls on Council to prioritise the development of this long outstanding project & to bring forward a report to the Council meeting in July to include the identification of all funding options available and a timetable towards completion so that the Council can consider its options.

Cllrs Hunter and Ferguson to Move:

We call upon the Council to provide a report on the possible use of Council meeting rooms to be extended out to Council leisure and community facilities, to allow all Councillors access to a safe and secure environment to carry out their role whilst being in their respective constituencies.

Cllr Harkin to Move:

Council supports and calls for immediate action to implement commitments to workers’ rights contained in the Stormont New Decade, New Approach document.

Council gives its full support to the Trade Union Campaign for Better Work, Better Lives.

Council supports the Trade Union proposal for a Stormont Social Policy Forum.

Council reaffirms its support for workers’ rights and trade union representation for all in Derry and Strabane and calls on all employers whether private, public or community to respect their rights.

Cllr McCann to Move:

Council notes is alarm at the refusal of Tory Secretary of State, Brandon Lewis to support legislation requiring private landlords to make their properties fit for human habitation.

Council supports the ‘right to a decent home’, contained in the New Decade, New Approach document.

Council is alarmed that the Foyle area has the highest number of homeless in the North.  There is a housing crisis across Ireland and Council supports campaigns for affordable housing for all.

Council calls upon Stormont to immediately give the Housing Executive the ability to take the lead in building the houses we need across the district.
