Waiving Costs for over 75s to Council Leisure Services

Councillor Cooper to Move:

This Council recognises and welcomes the increased usage of Council leisure facilities by the over 75’s. Due to their inability to drive, many of these users have to regularly pay for transport to these leisure facilities which in many cases creates financial hardship. Therefore in order to further encourage active lifestyles for our older citizens, this Council will bring a report to the Health and Community Committee with a view to waiving costs for over 75’s to use Council leisure facilities.

Councillor Donnelly to Move:

Given that the primary role of British policing in Ireland is to deny the Irish people our right to national sovereignty, this Council calls on the Dublin Government to cancel their proposed commemoration for the Royal Irish Constabulary.

Councillor R Barr to Move:

That this Council contacts the Education Authority Northern Ireland to investigate the possibility of acquiring the site left vacant by the closure of Milltown Grammar School at Liskey Road, Strabane, with a view to developing the site to provide a visitor’s centre, park and nature trail.

Councillor Farrell to Move:

That this Council reaffirms its opposition to all aspects of Welfare Reform;

recognises that Welfare Reform is causing financial hardship for many people across our city and district;

encourages those adversely affected by migration to Universal Credit or Personal Independence Payment to appeal against the decision;

disagrees with current protocols which force existing ESA claimants who fail medical assessments to apply for Universal Credit or go without money while the appeal is ongoing;

and calls on the Minister for Communities to introduce a system which allows disallowed ESA claimants to remain on a legacy benefit while the appeal is being heard.

Councillor McCann to Move:

Council reaffirms its support for the campaign by the Bloody Sunday families for justice and accountability.

Council condemns comments from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other Tory MPs referring to ‘vexatious prosecutions’.

Those responsible for the murder of innocent people on the streets of Derry on January 30 1972 should be held to account.

Council calls for support for the 48th anniversary week of events and the March for Justice on Sunday 2 February.

Councillor Harkin to Move:

Council shares the widespread disappointment that the Executive parties agreed a deal with the British and Irish Governments to restore the Stormont Assembly without securing financial commitments and costings.

Council is alarmed at the emphasis on reform of public services included in the new agreement.

Council opposes any attempt to put the financial burden of any shortfall upon all those who have suffered the most from austerity.

Council opposes any attempt to introduce new water charges.

Council calls for any increase in household rate bills to be linked to the ability to pay.

Council opposes any reduction of the Corporation Tax.
